About the Role
We are seeking a skilled Software Engineer with deep expertise in WordPress development and strong PHP/server-side programming skills. You will be responsible for building, maintaining, and optimising custom WordPress solutions, including themes, plugins, and full-stack web applications. This role offers the opportunity to work on diverse projects and contribute to both front-end and back-end development in a collaborative team environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain custom WordPress themes and plugins following best practices and coding standards.
- Build and manage server-side functionality using PHP, including RESTful APIs, custom post types, taxonomies, and advanced custom fields.
- Implement responsive, accessible, and performant front-end interfaces within the WordPress ecosystem.
- Collaborate with designers, project managers, and stakeholders to translate requirements into technical solutions.
- Troubleshoot and debug issues across the full stack, including WordPress core, plugins, themes, and server configurations.
- Optimise website performance, security, and scalability through caching strategies, database optimisation, and server tuning.
- Participate in code reviews, documentation, and knowledge sharing with the development team.
- Integrate third-party services and APIs as needed to extend platform functionality.
- Manage deployment workflows including version control (Git), staging environments, and CI/CD pipelines.
Requirements
- Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or related field.
- 3+ years of professional experience in WordPress development (themes, plugins, and custom solutions).
- Strong proficiency in PHP, including object-oriented programming and modern PHP practices (PHP 7.4+/8.x).
- Solid experience with server-side development including Linux environments, Apache/Nginx, and MySQL/MariaDB.
- Proficiency with HTML5, CSS3/SASS, and JavaScript (ES6+).
- Familiarity with the WordPress REST API and WP-CLI.
- Experience with version control systems, particularly Git.
- Understanding of web security best practices (OWASP, input validation, authentication, and authorisation).
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently and within a team.
- Experience developing custom Gutenberg blocks using React and the WordPress Block API, including block patterns and full-site editing (FSE).
Preferred Skills
- Experience with WooCommerce development and eCommerce solutions.
- Knowledge of React, Vue.js, or other modern JavaScript frameworks.
- Familiarity with Docker, containerised development environments, and cloud platforms (AWS, DigitalOcean, or similar).
- Experience with headless WordPress / decoupled architectures (e.g., WPGraphQL, Next.js front-ends).
- Understanding of SEO best practices and web analytics integration.
Shopify Development — A Bonus
- Experience with Shopify theme development (Liquid templating), Shopify APIs, or Shopify app development. Ability to integrate Shopify with WordPress (e.g., headless setups or WooCommerce migration) is a strong differentiator.
